The queen of tropical fruits, the pineapple, doesn’t grow on trees. Instead, it’s the fruit of Ananas comosus, a large bromeliad with long, serrated leaves that’s native to South America.

Each pineapple plant produces just one fruit (normally after two to three years). Most plants produce pups, though, which can be easily cut off the mother and planted. Pineapple plants can grow up to 1.8 metres wide and high – make sure you give them enough space in your garden.

To protect your plant from weeds and retain moisture (which is especially important over dry Gold Coast winters), mulch it with sugarcane or another organic material. Leave a 15-centimetre gap around the base of the plant.

Our pineapple plants tend to be less than a year old, so please call or email us if you’re interested in a plant that will bear fruit quickly.
